Sommieres - Going South of France

Sommieres is a lovely little town in the South of France. It is situated between Nimes and Montpellier and has a wide river flowing through it. Since the area is small, it is relatively easy to spend a day here just wandering around the old narrow grid streets. If you are travelling to this side of the planet, then you need to read the information we have on this picturesque location.

Sommieres used to be the home of the famous writer Lawrence Durrell, who claimed that he had seen nothing more beautiful than this town in all his travels. The old but magnificent Roman Bridge that crosses the river acts as the centrepiece of the town. Once you get pass the bridge, you will enter the town of Sommieres, where you will see a large clock face. This old town was laid out on a grid pattern by the Romans and much of it remains amazingly the same. Above the town, you will find the remnants of a castle, which offers a breathtaking view of the Pic du St. Loup Mountain.

If you are done touring around Sommieres, you can travel to its neighbouring city, Montpellier, where you will find the Place de la Comedie, which is its main focal point, and many others. Aside from that, there is Nimes, which is the capital of the Gard department, a classical mistral norm and a popular tourist destination. In Nimes, you will find several remains of the Roman Empire, such as the elliptical Roman amphitheatre and the 18th-century Jardins de la Fontaine, to name a few.
